Members of YPFDJ Oakland and young members of the Eritrean community in the Bay Area partnered with a regular initiative by Lighthouse Oakland to hand out hot meals, snacks, water, and blankets to residents of tent encampments in Oakland. Together with other community volunteers, we prepared meals and drove to three different encampments in Oakland to assist the homeless on New Years Eve. This experience was incredibly enlightening to our volunteers as they were able to witness first-hand some of the human costs of hyper-gentrification and displacement as a result of the housing crisis in the Bay Area.
